You want excitement? You want fun? You want one of the best damn movies youll see this year? Then you need to get behind the wheel, drive to the nearest theater and see Baby Driver. The story isnt complicated: a getaway driver named Baby lives in his own world, one that has a constant soundtrack. Baby meets a girl, tries to do one last job to leave his life of crime, but like most one last jobs, it doesnt quite work out. Its a simple tale told with masterful moviemaking magic and fresh, frenetic flavor from writer/director Edgar Wright. Wright has taken everything he learned from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and The Worlds End and elevated it all into something incredible. Baby Driver is an idea hes had gestating for over twenty years, and you can see every carefully crafted inch of the film reflects his passion, tenacity, and well, drive in making this a modern genre mashup between music video, gangster film, action movie, and fairy tale. That sounds like a mishmosh but trust me, it all gels together into something unbelievably special. Wright has always had a talent for blending music and the moving picture, but hes elevated it into something completely new with Baby Driver. The movie never ceases to have a rhythm and a beat to it. You could spend the entire running time tapping your toes along to the insanely energetic soundtrack. Seriously, this album is going to be this years Awesome Mix. Vol. 1. But its not only the music that makes Baby Driver such a delight. Youve got a cast that is having the time of their lives. Ansel Elgort is a triumph as Baby. You might notice that he has a Han Solo-esque jacket on during the movie, and I kind of wish he was playing the legendary smuggler in the new Han Solo film. Hes that good. Lily James is equally captivating as Debora, and the two have such great chemistry that it would make Walter White smile. The rest of the cast is rounded out by dependable character actors; Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, and Elza Gonzalez make up the kind of iconic gangster squad that makes this class of movie shine. And to top it all off, the movie doesnt skimp on the script. This is a tightly told contemporary fable thats as classic as it is innovative. Wright injects humor and pathos in all the right doses so that this doesnt become a style-over-substance glitter piece. Every character is fully formed and gets their moment in the sun. The emotional payoffs are a knockout across the board and will have you invested and engaged at every twist and turn. Youll be shocked, tense, excited, and overjoyed by the time the house lights come up. Its a rollercoaster ride thats going at lightspeed. Baby Driver gets a 5 out of 5. Id give it a 5000 out of 5 if theyd let me. (They wont). It is everything you want from a night at the movies. Fast-paced story, heart-pounding action, swoonworthy romance, colorful characters, laughs, gasps, tears and triumph. Baby Driver is this years Mad Max: Fury Road: a game-changer of unfettered style that will go on to inspire future filmmakers to create cinema. Undoubtedly, Baby Driver is the best film of 2017. It will take a gargantuan achievement to knock it from that spot. As of now, 2017 has found its cinematic champion.

A Cure For Wellness is a new psychological horror from director Gore Verbinksi. The films star, Dane Dehaan, spoke to Fandom to tell us exactly why it might just be the most bizarre movie to hit cinemas in 2017.Gore told me he wanted to make a movie that was inspired by the thrillers of the 70s, says DeHaan. He talked about the themes of it and the sickness in society. Then he sent me home with the script.DeHaan says that he was directed by Verbinski to watch a number of films, but this was more for tone than anything else. For DeHaan, the film is an entirely original thing. He says, I watched The Shining, Rosemarys Baby, The Omen, The Tenant, Rear Window. Someone the other day said it reminded them of a mix between Alice in Wonderland and A Clockwork Orange. I thought maybe that was the closest someone has gotten to nailing [it], if there are two movies it could be like, like maybe those two movies made a baby. But even that doesnt quite do it.One of the films standout scenes is the sequence in the isolation tank, in which DeHanns character Lockhart is immersed as a form of therapy. In the scene, eels are introduced to the water.It took two weeks to shoot, says DeHaan. I didnt expect to be underwater for two weeks when I read the script but that was what we needed to do to get the sequence. Some of the eels in the movie are real but those [in the tank] are fake eels, Im happy to say. I dont think I would have gotten in that tank with all those eels!One reason the film is so creepy and odd is because of its unexpectedly mixed tone. Theres tension and horror, sure, but theres also a whiff of satire about it. Dehaan says, I think the movie is fun to watch. We certainly werent laughing while we were making it but I think there is an entertaining thing about it. I think its not just scary; like I said, its a wild ride and you will laugh sometimes. Not all the time, but youll laugh sometimes.A Cure For Wellness is released in the US on February 17 and the UK on February 24.
