Gears of War 4 is the next chapter in the Gears saga that picks up 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3. The game puts players in the armor of Marcus Fenix's son JD Fenix. JD has some big boots to fill to live up to his father's legacy, and so will the new game when it releases this October for Xbox One and PC. The original Gears of War, was released 10 years ago on November 7, 2006 exclusively on the Xbox 360. Its impact on games was immediately felt. Let's explore the influence of Gears of War and how it changed the face of shooters forever.

But while Julia Ducournaus film is both startling and original, you can also see the influence of some choice classic horror.We spoke to Julia Ducournau about the films that influenced Raw.One of those films is Brian DePalmas Carrie. The thing is, considering the premise of my own movie I knew that in the audience most of the people would think about Carrie on their own, she says. And so I thought: Okay, Im going to do a wink to that famous blood-shower scene so that we know its here. I know I go on the same territory, but my movie is very different. So after that you can move on, you know?Less direct nods go to the films of David Cronenberg  in the themes she broaches as well as the body horror represented on screen.The way he filmed bodies and the themes he tackles  with mortality and the human condition, and identity as well  are themes that I have always been interested in and that I treat in my own work, she says. As for her favourite Cronenberg films? I think as a filmmaker Dead Ringers would be my favourite one because for me its like his opera, she says. It is an opera in five acts. Its a Greek tragedy.Although for sheer punch, she picks another: As an audience in terms of emotions I would say The Fly because this movie makes me cry over and over and over again each time I watch it. Raw is currently on release in the US and hits screens in the UK on April 7.

Prey is the latest game from Arkane Studios, the developer behind the criticallyacclaimed Dishonored series. Unlike Dishonoreds steampunk aesthetic, Preysdesign borrows from classic cerebral sci-fi fare to sustain its atmosphere ofsuspense. In the video above, Creative Director Raphael Colantonio reveals some ofthe surprising influences of the game, which launches May 5 on PS4, Xbox One, andPC.TranStar Corporation and the Tech of Talos IThe TranStar Corporation [who runs the space station protagonist Morgan Yu isstranded on] is influenced by any one of the big high-tech companies that you canthink of in Silicon Valley.The technology itself, we wanted something that was a little more raw  so a littlebit of [movie director] Terry Gilliam. But Terry Gilliam is very dark, so instead in ourgame, because the aliens are dark, we wanted something that contrasts with that. Sowe went with the more colorful, happy version of Terry Gilliam.Also, theres a lot of influence from [Danish electronics company] Bang Olufsen.They had very slick -- it was in the 70s and the 80s -- super slick looks.Protagonist Morgan Yu and His Brother Alex YuTheres Morgan Yu and Alex Yu, and some people say that Alex Yu looks a little bitlike [Valve President] Gabe Newell, which is coincidental. But we love Gabe Newell --in our past weve worked with Valve.Enemy MimicsThose aliens, we call them Mimics because they were a little inspired by the Mimicin Dungeons and Dragons. But we made the next version of that, the next levelMimic -- one that can actually turn into anything.The GLOO CannonThe GLOO Cannon you could say its a very Portal-y kind of weapon. You can makean entire game around it with some puzzles. And in our case it is a bit of a disruptor,because once you have this, you can shortcut a lot of other mechanics.Dead ScientistsIn the game, youll notice that there are some dead scientists and other peoplearound, and they have this really tortured expression on their faces. That inspirationwas the film The Ring.Space LightingHow do you work the light so that it feels like youre in space? Because the sun ismore stark. Its not filtered the same way in space that it is on Earth. Thats why welooked at some movies like Solaris, Sunshine, or Moon. And we got some mood outof that, and some inspiration.Through the Looking GlassSince were talking about references, the biggest reference to this game is probablySystem Shock. [System Shock developer] Looking Glass is part of the heritage ingeneral of any Arkane Studios game.Also, it sounds odd, but theres a little bit of the TV show Lost in there as well, thatSixties vibe when they found those hatches.Total RecallBut also Total Recall is a good inspiration. Theres this idea in the game that youneed to escape this place and you dont know whats going on. Its dangerous andyoure trying to survive, do your best.But somehow youre guided by a character who wants you to see a video of yourself.This is the beginning of the, Hold on a minute, what am I doing here exactly? Whoam I? And its at this point that the player is not really sure whats happening here.And so that thing that Total Recall managed to capture so well, thats what weretrying to do.

Having made the fourth most successful film of all-time in the shape of Jurassic World, writer-director Colin Trevorrow took a break from blockbuster moviemaking to craft the more modest Book of Henry. But now he's getting back on the big-budget horse to shoot Star Wars: Episode IX.He's also been busy co-scripting dino-sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which will be helmed by A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona. So we asked Trevorrow what lessons he learned on the first dinosaur movie that he has taken into the sequel, and that he'll be using on Episode IX."I think what I learned on Jurassic World is the same thing I applied to Jurassic World 2" Trevorrow explained. "I know how hard it is to direct one of those movies. I know how much of your brainwaves it takes up at any given moment. So I wanted to provide [director] J.A. Bayona with somebody there who could be thinking solely about the screenplay the entire time, and that person was me."And Im going to have someone else on Star Wars who will be able to be that writer thinking about the characters and the narrative at all times so that Im not relying solely on myself. It is such a collaborative process on all of these movies."Its something that I learned in film school and something that has been re-enforced time and time and time again. Surrounding myself with different perspectives  people who can look at something and say Wait a minute! That matters and Ive done that more and more with every film that Ive worked on."The Book of Henry is in cinemas now, while Star Wars: Episode IX is set to his screens June 2019.
