Breathing new life into a popular, nostalgia-filled childrens franchise isnt easy. But the actors who comprise the titular superheroes of Sabans Power Rangers  Naomi Scott, Becky G., Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler and Ludi Lin  embrace the high school aged characters as if they were truly walking in their shoes. Im Billy and I play RJ, flubs Cyler as hes introducing himself and the character he plays. I mean Im RJ and I play Billy. Sometimes! snorts Scott with a laugh. Sometimes they actually do cross into each other, adds Becky G. That familial camaraderie exudes from all five actors, making it easy for lines to blur between fact and fiction. Case in point: I play Trini, the yellow Power Ranger, explains Becky G. I think whats really cool about her is that she is independent due to her circumstances. She kind of found no point in making friends ever because shes constantly moving schools. And then, finally, shes forced to be friends with people. And the evolution of those friendships turns into really genuine relationships in the crazy adventure that we all go into together. This sentiment is clearly reflected by all five actors during the course of the interview  real-life strangers who became close friends during the shooting of the film. Who is Ranger?

Sure, weve seen our heroes served up as dark and brooding (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). Weve also seen them self-deprecating (Iron Man) and dysfunctional (The Avengers). But to compare our super-powered saviors to a crew of detention bound misfits (no matter how timeless that movie may be), well thats just crazy talk! Its ultimately a coming of age story like The Breakfast Club, says Dacre Montgomery, who plays Jason the Red Ranger in the upcoming Sabans Power Rangers. Five kids that meet, they dont initially like each other and then they form a bond a relationship. And the Power Rangers thing is almost like a metaphor, I guess, for the whole journey that we go on. A metaphor thats relatable to audiences of all ages, the cast  and studio  is banking on. I think its what attracts old fans to the series and new fans, too, notes Ludi Lin, a.k.a. Zack the Black Ranger. Its to awaken that inner kid inside of you. Everybody wants to be a hero. Everybody wants to be good. Its that ageless theme.

When it comes to portraying a big screen superhero, its not the powers that make the champion. It's really about the costume. And with a franchise as deep as the Power Rangers, there's a lot of fabric-based inspiration to work from. So when it came to rebooting the popular TV series, the filmmakers decided to up their game. Unfortunate for the cast, that meant a rather long first costume fitting."I didn't eat because I didn't know it was going to take three hours," recounts Becky G. (the Yellow Ranger). "So I was hangry! I felt myself feeling more and more claustrophobic until they finally put the mirrors in front of us. And that's when I felt like, 'This looks incredible. I'm a Power Ranger!' It was crazy. It was this surreal feeling."Of course, it helps that the costumes aren't brightly colored spandex. Rather, the Rangers sport a battle armor that literally transforms from them from average high school teenagers into masked superheroes."I think I get what the helmet's all about," explains Ludi Lin (the Black Ranger) in a moment of superhero self-reflection. "Once you put the helmet on, you really feel like a superhero. And I was thinking about that lately... it's that anonymity. It evokes this certain feeling. When you put it on, you're masked and its not like you're YOU anymore. To me it speaks to the fact that anybody can be a superhero."
