 Final 'The Mummy' Trailer Lets the Monster Loose

Believed to be safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day. 'The Mummy' stars Tom Cruise, joined by a cast including Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond), Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, TVs Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TVs American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), Oscar-winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and will be directed by Alex Kurtzman.

The Bride of Frankenstein officially follows The Mummy as the next instalment in Universals new Dark Universe franchise  a shared universe of films resurrecting creatures from the old Universal monster movies. We also already know well get an Invisible Man film starring Johnny Depp. You might well have heard talk of other films in the works.Now the creative mind behind the Dark Universe, and director and producer of The Mummy, Alex Kurtzman, has exclusively revealed to FANDOM that well get Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame among other titles added to the roster.We know were going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man, he says.He also reveals plans to explore beyond the boundaries of the existing Universal monster properties: There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.The Mummy opens up some intriguing possibilities  embedding Russell Crowes Dr. Jekyll into the world and his mysterious organization Prodigium as well as leaving us questioning where Tom Cruises character Nick Morton may be heading.The Dark Universe is an ambitious project in its infancy and casting rumours are already beginning to swirl around the franchise. There has been talk, for instance, that Angelina Jolie may pick up the Bride of Frankenstein role. 'The Mummy' Producer Says Phantom and Hunchback To Be Added to the Dark Universe

Sofia Boutellas character in The Mummy  real name Ahmanet  is angry. So might you be if you were living in a mans world and find yourself stripped of your inheritance because your dad happens to have a baby boy. Originally destined to become the Queen of Egypt, Ahmanets thirst for power leads to her downfall and she finds herself mummified alive. Bogus.When she wakes up some 5,000 years later, shes still mad as hell. Plus, it turns out shes made a promise to the Egyptian God Set to provide him with the body of a mortal man that he can inhabit. Which means she then makes it her mission to fulfil that promise, and suck the life out of actual living people to get herself back to full strength.Sofia Boutella spoke to FANDOM to tell us that Ahmanet isnt all bad, and that her temper is something a little love and self-care could probably tackle.She has a reason for why shes doing this and doesnt come from a place of pure evil. She comes from a place of having been deceived and heartbroken and she just wants justice, she explains. I think there is a space for redemption there. She just needs a hug. She just needs a bit of love.So how would Sofia like to see Ahmanet develop in future films in the Dark Universe?Id like to see her in [the] modern day taking on normal life trying to blend in, see what happens. Try to buy some groceries at the supermarket interact with people I dont know, go to the gym, go to the sun.Anything else?Maybe she can just compromise. Instead of taking their lives, those poor people, I think maybe she can compromise and go and get some sun instead or try to eat more carrots. A bit of Vitamin A in there will help her, eat a bunch of mushrooms for some Vitamin D. What else? Some green juices. That will do. She just doesnt know diet very well. Thats why her methods are a bit eccentric.Maybe the Dark Universe could surprise us all and go somewhere unexpected after all.The Mummy hits screens on June 9.

Sofia Boutella on How Sun, Love and Green Juices Could Solve Her Mummy Issues

Ahmanets fate is unclear at the end of the film but Sofia hints that there may well be more to come from this particular Universal monster: She stayed alive in that sarcophagus for 5,000 years so why not for another two years? Thats nothing to her.When youre dealing with the supernatural, anythings possible. And when a film deals in the undead, its highly likely that death isnt necessarily the end for any of the characters. FANDOM spoke to the director and cast of The Mummy and pumped them for information about whether their characters will return to fight another day.Hopefully youll see Toms character again, says The Mummy director and series creator Alex Kurtzman. And obviously Annabelles character Jenny is probably going off to find him, and well see what happens with Ahmanet.Actress Sofia Boutella who plays resurrected mummy Ahmanet teases: I dont think shell ever die really. Without revealing too much for those who have yet to see the film, something happens to Jenny that may or may not have fundamentally changed her.A Classic Transformation?I would like to delve a little deeper into her dark side, she says. Into, you know, this mystery about her that I think unravels a very exciting truth that well come to know. I just want to play with the idea that potentially she could become a classic monster. Or not.Jake Johnson, who plays Tom Cruises characters right-hand man, Chris Vail, is hopeful that his character will return  suggesting theres more to come from him.I hope the writers write me into the next adventure because this one was a lot of fun to make and I think theres more story to be told, he says.He elaborates on the transformation his character goes through in the movie, adding: Is my character supernatural at the end of this movie? The answer to that would be yes. You know, he gets killed and then gets a curse on him and comes back from the dead and he haunts Toms character. And then at the end, Toms character brings him back but takes away the Mummy, if you will  takes the Mummy out of him. So I dont think that just goes away. I think thats still in him but he appears to look a lot nicer.It certainly sounds like we'll see all of these characters again in the Dark Universe  whether that's in the next instalment, The Bride of Frankenstein, reWhen youre dealing with the supernatural, anythings possible.
