'Spider-Man: Homecoming' International Trailer

Marvel Studios has a track record for making good films. Not great films  the only one that flirts with greatness is Guardians of the Galaxy  but consistently pleasing popcorn fare. There is nothing wrong with that. Easily digestible blockbuster fun is what a lot of people want out of the moviegoing experience, and SMH is no exception. But, once you start scratching away at the surface, Spider-Man: Homecoming begins to show more than a few cracks. Lets stay positive for now because there is a lot to like about Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland nails the boyish charm of Peter Parker and the childish power fantasy of being Spider-Man. The films tone backs him up as it stays consistently light without feeling too geared to little kids. And there is a lot of humor to be found in the film. Maybe too much but when the jokes do land, they are a hoot. Youre going to get a big kick out of Captain Americas appearances in the movie.But, the film does have problems. The driving plot  Spidey stopping the Vulture from selling high-tech weaponry  sounds more interesting in concept than execution. While Michael Keaton is a treat as Adrian Toomes, hes fairly restrained for most of the films running time. He gets one or two moments of over-the-top goodness, but hes pretty one-note as far as his character arc is concerned. And the actual story between him and Peter is the least enthralling element of the movie. They have a single good scene together (no spoilers) but its a small character moment thats a hundred times better than any of their duels. Their rivalry is also hindered by some misguided direction during some of the big action scenes. A lot of Spider-Man: Homecomings fight scenes take place at night and the frame is a little too dark during these bits. That issue is exacerbated by a lot of frantic editing and staging. The ideas behind the fight scenes are often cool but they get bogged down by some clunky filmmaking choices. Spider-Man: Homecoming gets a 3 out of 5. It isnt bad. Its safe, unsurprising, and a little choppy at times but never bad. If youre a big fan of the Marvel Studios films or the character of Spider-Man, youll probably love it. If youre a film fan, youll enjoy it despite its noticeable flaws and missteps. But man, just wait for that post-credits stinger. Its a doozy.

With Spider-Man now an official member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's time to start thinking about who he can face off against! Here are five of Spidey's biggest baddies that we want to see in the MCU.

5 Spider-Man Villains We Want in the MCU

Ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, FANDOM spoke to Sony boss Amy Pascal and Marvel chief Kevin Feige to try and clear up the confusion over exactly how Sonys Marvel Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are connected. Pascal says, First, there is Spider-Man happily in the place where hes supposed to be which is in the Marvel Universe. I think everything comes from that. This is the signpost, the tentpole, the signature and the other movies that Sonys going to make, in their relationship to this [MCU] Spider-Man, take place in this [separate Sony] world. Although youre not going to see them in the Marvel Universe, its in the same reality. Kevin Feige backs Pascals comments, saying her response is the perfect answer. What FANDOM understands from this is that there will be no crossover in terms of character appearances between Sonys films and Marvels films  despite Venom in particular being very closely connected to Spider-Man  but that all of the action across all of the films happens in the same reality. So there you are. Pascal doesnt close down the notion that the character of Venom may well appear in a film with Spider-Man at some point, saying, Venom is a character that is closely associated with Spidey and there may be some day where you see them together, you never know. This follows the line that Kevin Feige takes, which is never say never. When asked if Spider-Man could appear in the upcoming Venom movie, Pascal says, I cant say. But this is likely to have been a classic no comment comment rather than any hint that the webslinger might show up. Its safe to assume based on all the other interviews this pair have given in the run-up to the release of Spider-Man that that isnt happening. Pascal did give us some information about the likely tone of Sonys Venom movie, however, which will apparently be R-rated. The film, which has Tom Hardy on board, has recruited Zombielands Ruben Fleischer to direct. Pascal says, Well, Ruben is a very talented, ironic, funny guy. He did a great job with Zombieland, so when you think of that mixed with Venom, I think that tells you what it should be. The duo have also been talking about where the Spider-Man sequel fits into the MCU timeline. The sequel will arrive in 2020, two months after Avengers 4. But, like Spider-Man: Homecoming  which, to quote Feige, picks up right after Peters adventures in [Captain America:] Civil War  the events of the Homecoming sequel will pick up immediately where the fourth Avengers film leaves off. What I think we should focus on is this Spider-Man who started in Civil War and then has this movie, and then will be in the Avengers movie. And we are starting now the next one which will start a few minutes after Avengers 4 wraps as a story, Pascal reveals. In the meantime, Pascal and Feige both agree that there are still plenty of surprises left for audiences to discover in this highly anticipated Spider-Man film. Despite a batch of released footage that seems to have already shared a lot with audiences, Pascal tells us: Oh, theres really big surprises. This is not one of those trailers that gives away the movie. In fact, weve watched the movie with audiences where you hear an audible [gasps]. Spider-Man: Homecoming hits UK screens on July 5 and opens in the US on July 7.
