Prey is the latest game from Arkane Studios, the developer behind the criticallyacclaimed Dishonored series. Unlike Dishonoreds steampunk aesthetic, Preysdesign borrows from classic cerebral sci-fi fare to sustain its atmosphere ofsuspense. In the video above, Creative Director Raphael Colantonio reveals some ofthe surprising influences of the game, which launches May 5 on PS4, Xbox One, andPC.TranStar Corporation and the Tech of Talos IThe TranStar Corporation [who runs the space station protagonist Morgan Yu isstranded on] is influenced by any one of the big high-tech companies that you canthink of in Silicon Valley.The technology itself, we wanted something that was a little more raw  so a littlebit of [movie director] Terry Gilliam. But Terry Gilliam is very dark, so instead in ourgame, because the aliens are dark, we wanted something that contrasts with that. Sowe went with the more colorful, happy version of Terry Gilliam.Also, theres a lot of influence from [Danish electronics company] Bang Olufsen.They had very slick -- it was in the 70s and the 80s -- super slick looks.Protagonist Morgan Yu and His Brother Alex YuTheres Morgan Yu and Alex Yu, and some people say that Alex Yu looks a little bitlike [Valve President] Gabe Newell, which is coincidental. But we love Gabe Newell --in our past weve worked with Valve.Enemy MimicsThose aliens, we call them Mimics because they were a little inspired by the Mimicin Dungeons and Dragons. But we made the next version of that, the next levelMimic -- one that can actually turn into anything.The GLOO CannonThe GLOO Cannon you could say its a very Portal-y kind of weapon. You can makean entire game around it with some puzzles. And in our case it is a bit of a disruptor,because once you have this, you can shortcut a lot of other mechanics.Dead ScientistsIn the game, youll notice that there are some dead scientists and other peoplearound, and they have this really tortured expression on their faces. That inspirationwas the film The Ring.Space LightingHow do you work the light so that it feels like youre in space? Because the sun ismore stark. Its not filtered the same way in space that it is on Earth. Thats why welooked at some movies like Solaris, Sunshine, or Moon. And we got some mood outof that, and some inspiration.Through the Looking GlassSince were talking about references, the biggest reference to this game is probablySystem Shock. [System Shock developer] Looking Glass is part of the heritage ingeneral of any Arkane Studios game.Also, it sounds odd, but theres a little bit of the TV show Lost in there as well, thatSixties vibe when they found those hatches.Total RecallBut also Total Recall is a good inspiration. Theres this idea in the game that youneed to escape this place and you dont know whats going on. Its dangerous andyoure trying to survive, do your best.But somehow youre guided by a character who wants you to see a video of yourself.This is the beginning of the, Hold on a minute, what am I doing here exactly? Whoam I? And its at this point that the player is not really sure whats happening here.And so that thing that Total Recall managed to capture so well, thats what weretrying to do.

Despite opening with one of the strongest gaming sequences of all time, theres definitely something missing from Prey. The promise of revealing the secrets of the Yu family and the alien-infested Talos I might keep you going to begin with, but its not long until the game bombards you with so much side content its easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Thankfully the side missions are varied enough that you dont mind being a little distracted. Whether youre searching for missing crew members still showing some vital signs, catching a murderer or avenging dead lovers, theres so much to get stuck into. But theres no getting away from the fact the quests are very much go there, get this and come back. Yes, Prey is a little bit obsessed with fetch quests, keycodes, security passes and checking your emails. When you actually get back to the main story, delving into the mystery of Morgan Yu and co is utterly gripping. It just takes a little too long to get there. In terms of gameplay, Prey definitely bears the DNA of Arkanes other title Dishonored, but there are strong resemblances to those big names in games like System Shock, BioShock, Half-Life and Dead Space. The real difference here though is your ability to harness alien powers. Just like all the trailers have promised, turning yourself into a mug or a roll of toilet paper is incredible fun, but so is mind-control, wielding fire and dishing out kinectic blasts.Its just a shame that the game seems to punish you for messing around with the Typhon powers. The more you gain, the more enemies youll have to face and the more likely you are to be hunted by the behemoth that is the Nightmare. But despite our quibbles with the gameplay, the atmosphere that Arkane has created with Prey is applaudable. Mimics never cease to surprise you, all the aliens have great personalities  if you can say that about something that terrifies you  and the sense of tension and paranoia is always palpable. And its also a game that we can still recommend. It might not feature the best story structure and can feel repetitive at times, but this a slow burn that anyone interested in horror games should experience.
