We just saw the new trailer for The Conjuring 2 and it has a few of those signature James Wan moments that have made his films such big successes. The sleight of hand he’s mastered in generating a scare gag is evident in a hallway sequence as well as a mirror sequence featuring a decaying nun. We’ve become so accustomed to checking the shadows and anticipating a reveal that it’s getting harder and harder to generate that tension. The first film was excellent and the trailer seems to continue the character-driven nature, but Annabelle and her creepy face aren’t around this time.

The famous Amityville case does play a part at least in spirit, which Wan said at the panel is a minor spoiler. It takes place in the UK this time, and the case involves a young girl being possessed by what appears to be a middle-aged man.
The film looks like the exact kind of follow-up fans have been craving and the new trailer is going to cause a few big jumps in the theater.
As an aside, they really dodged around the Aquaman question, a film Wan is theoretically in line to direct. Is this spin or is it just too soon make official statements?
