‘Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 2’ Track-List Announced

Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack ‘Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1’ topped the US album charts for 16 weeks in 2014. The album sold more than 1m copies in the States and 2.5m worldwide that year. Featuring toe-tapping tunes from the likes of David Bowie, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and 10cc, it was pretty much the soundtrack of that summer. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits screens in April, and anticipation is understandably high for the soundtrack sequel; a record that will doubtless be filling dancefloors in 2017.

Diversity and Complexity

Speaking to Superinteressante, Gunn said, “The soundtrack is great. I think it’s a more diverse soundtrack. I think the first soundtrack [had] a bunch of songs that maybe you heard but didn’t know the name of the song, you didn’t know the name of the singer. In this one we have some really incredibly famous songs, and then some songs that people have never heard of. So it’s a much more diverse soundtrack.”

With the first tape being a compilation that Peter Quill’s mother gave him when he was a kid, Gunn has revealed that this tape was crafted for a slightly older Star-Lord, making it a more mature mix.

“The soundtrack is an evolution from the soundtrack to the first movie,” he told io9 on the film’s set. “I think the first film was made for a child that was a couple years younger than the child that this music was made for. So it’s [got] slightly more complex songs.”

The Predictions

From the footage already released for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we’d already pinned down the following three tracks from the full playlist:

‘Come a Little Bit Closer’ – Jay and the Americans

This track featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy footage that was screened at Comic-Con in 2016 – specifically when Yondu was facing off against some Ravagers. The tale of a beautiful girl seducing the singer of the song, it was released in 1964, and proved to be Jay and the Americans’ biggest hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

‘The Chain’ – Fleetwood Mac

‘The Chain’ appeared in the Comic-Con montage and recent Super Bowl teaser. A choice cut from Fleetwood Mac’s acclaimed 1977 album ‘Rumours’, the concluding instrumental famously featured on Formula One coverage in the UK. In Guardians 2, the song will apparently play when Quill boards his father’s space-ship.

So those are the definites, but we also have a maybe. Gunn plays the movie’s music while filming to get his actors in the zone, and io9 reported hearing the following while visiting the set…

‘My Sweet Lord’ – George Harrison

Released at the tail-end of 1970, ‘My Sweet Lord’ was George Harrison’s first solo single, and became the biggest-selling song of 1971 in the UK. Written in praise of the Hindu god Krishna, it also topped the charts in the States, and later became embroiled in a copyright infringement suit. Although those visiting the set could hear the song, they weren’t allowed to watch the scene in question, so it’s currently unclear if it will appear in the film and on the album.

It turned out we were right with those three guesses, but now Director James Gunn and co have revealed the full tracklist for Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 2 and here it is:

‘Lake Shore Drive’ – Aliotta Haynes and Jeremiah

‘Bring It On Home to Me’ – Sam Cooke

‘Southern Nights’ – Glen Campbell

‘Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang’ – Silver

‘Father and Son’ – Cat Stevens

‘Flash Light’ – Parliament

‘Guardians Inferno’ – The Sheepers feat. David Hasselhoff

It seems that this will be an original track made specifically for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. It’s yet to appear in any trailers and there’s no video or audio online as yet.

‘Mix Tape 2’ is set to be one of the biggest soundtracks of the year – and the album that will doubtless be played at barbeques and parties throughout the summer. It’s available to download and buy from Friday, April 21.
