Gods of Egypt is an odd film. It boasts a huge budget and some reputable stars as well as the director of several beloved genre films, but it seems like a movie no one really asked for. Lionsgate is hoping to launch a new franchise with the Alex (The Crow, Dark City) Proyas film but the overall response to the project has been, to put it kindly, negative.
It’s an odd film once seen as well. It is loaded with all manner of special effects throughout its running time and much of the film feels as if generated before a greenscreen. There are some decent moments but overall it appears that the Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau film is going to be one of the first real big duds of the year.
With that said, it does have its charms and it’ll be exciting to see if some fandom develops for the ambitious effort.
