SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from Season 8, Episode 12 of The Walking Dead entitled “The Key.” Proceed with caution.

A mysterious new ally appeared on the latest episode of The Walking Dead, entitled “The Key.”

Georgie, a mature woman who seemingly lacks the instincts to have survived this long in the zombie apocalypse, appears and offers the Hilltop colony a deal: four crates of food and music records (not spoken word) for “knowledge.”

It’s a deal Georgie’s made other communities before, but exactly what knowledge she possesses is kept until after a deal is struck. Is it the location of supplies? A potential cure for the infection? Somehow, this information has kept her alive, fed, and apparently well-dressed.

Faced with dwindling resources, Maggie (along with Michonne and Enid), agrees to meet with Georgie and her two traveling companions — Hilda and Midge. Maggie initially refuses Georgie’s barter deal, taking her to Hilltop a prisoner. But after consulting with Michonne, Maggie agrees to Georgie’s terms.

Georgie ends up altering the terms, returning some of the desperately needed food back to Maggie. She also discloses her knowledge in the form of “The Key.”

“The Key” (which is also the title of the episode) ends up being plans to create windmills, aqueducts, and other things a society needs to flourish (ironically, these are things Deanna laid out as the former leader of Alexandria). Before departing, Georgie also says she will eventually return.

So is she truly a friend, or a cleverly disguised foe? Fans were mixed, but most felt she was a harmless Glenn Close lookalike.

Others felt she might be a recent villain from the comic books, Pamela Milton. Pamela is the leader of another survivor group, The Commonwealth.

But the prevailing theory is that “The Key” is a plot device to allow a time jump after the war with Negan ends. In the comics, the survivors establish a functioning community with many societal improvements (akin to the utopia Carl envisioned before he died). Of course, there are always those who want to claim utopia.
