With less than one month until the 2016 Teen Choice Awards, we’re starting to take a closer look at this year’s nominations. This week we’re looking at the television categories, and discussing who we think will be walking away with the infamous surfboard.

Teen Choice TV Show: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Who will win? With five of the six nominations coming from CW shows, it seems realistic to assume that one of these will be walking away as the winners. Last year the surfboard went to The Vampire Diaries, will they continue their reign? Or could Once Upon a Time take the crown, beating out all of their CW competition? OUAT fans are known for their competitiveness, so we believe they have a strong chance of winning out against the others.

Our best guess: Once Upon a Time

Teen Choice TV Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Who will win? Last year’s surfboard went to Jared Padalecki. Given that Supernatural has a well-established fan base spanning over many seasons, it seems likely he may succeed again. But what are the chances of say, The Flash’s Grant Gustin speeding in to take his place? Given that The Flash’s fan base continues to grow, whereas Supernatural seems to be dipping as a result of its more than ten-year presence on our TV screens, we believe that it’s somebody else’s chance to walk away with the surfboard, and that Grant seems extremely deserving of the honour.

Our best guess: Grant Gustin

Teen Choice TV Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Who will win? Nina Dobrev, last year’s winner, is absent from these nominations, meaning it’s anyone’s guess who will take her place. Each of these actresses has a strong fan base in their own right, preceding that of their show, and each one could be viewed as having a strong chance at gaining a new surfboard for their home. If we had to settle on a winner, we’re going with Lana Parilla. Again this relies on the competitiveness of the OUAT fans, combined with some arguments within fans of other shows over who would have been more deserving of a nomination.

Our best guess: Lana Parilla

Teen Choice TV Show: Drama

Who will win? Last year’s winner Pretty Little Liars remains a strong force in the listings although they face tough competition from Empire, last year’s winner for new television series. Could Empire beat out PLL this year? Or will one of the other nominations swoop in and topple their reign? Given the extreme and unprecedented success of Empire during its first season, we believe they have a strong and deserving chance of walking away victorious.

Our best guess: Empire

Teen Choice TV Actor: Drama

Who will win? Ian Harding, 2015 winner, faces competition from two of his co-stars this year. Given the target audience for the awards, it seems likely a PLL star will be leaving as a winner this year, but which one?

Our best guess: Ian Harding

Teen Choice TV Actress: Drama

  • Ashley Benson, Pretty Little Liars
  • Jennifer Lopez, Shades of Blue
  • Kerry Washington, Scandal
  • Maia Mitchell, The Fosters
  • Taraji P Henson, Empire
  • Troian Bellisario, Pretty Little Liars

Who will win? Just like the Sci-Fi category last year’s winner, Lucy Hale, is absent from this year’s nominations. The long established fan base of PLL makes it likely that one of her co-stars will take her place, however, they do face stiff competition from a number of popular actresses. We’d like Taraji to receive an accolade for her role in Empire, but are the fans consistent enough to face off their competition?

Our best guess: Taraji P Henson

Teen Choice TV Show: Comedy

Who will win? Considering the target audience for the awards, it seems likely that Austin and Ally or Liv and Maddie will be crowned winners. The Big Bang Theory, 2015 winner, is absent from the 2016 listings, while a couple of these shows seem less likely to appeal to a teenage audience.

Our best guess: Jane the Virgin

Jane The Virgin cast

Teen Choice TV Actor: Comedy

  • Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
  • Jaime Camil, Jane the Virgin
  • Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
  • Ross Lynch, Austin and Ally
  • Taylor Lautner, Cuckoo

Who will win? Of the six nominations, Jaime Camil and Ross Lynch are the only two nominated alongside their shows. With this in mind, it seems likely their fanbases are the ones who are more likely to be voting for the eventual winner, with Lynch’s win last year giving him a strong chance of succeeding again. We love what Jaime brings to his role as Rogelio de la Vega in Jane the Virgin and believe he is more than deserving of some recognition, but will the fans agree?

Our best guess: Jaime Camil

Teen Choice TV Actress: Comedy

  • Candace Cameron Bure, Fuller House
  • Dove Cameron, Liv and Maddie
  • Emma Roberts, Scream Queens
  • Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin
  • Laura Marano, Austin and Ally
  • Lea Michele, Scream Queens

Who will win? Glees Lea Michele took home her final award for her role as Rachel Berry last year. Will her loyal fans have followed her over to her new acting venture? Or does another actress stand a chance at stealing her throne? Scream Queens is aimed at an older audience than Glee and so it’s reasonable to assume the fans are less likely to be voting for these awards. With this in mind, we think Laura Marano from Austin and Ally has a strong chance, and could make it a joint win with Ross Lynch in the Comedy Actor category.

Our best guess: Gina Rodríguez
