Star Trek: Discovery episode 3 “Context is for Kings” was released on CBS All Access this Sunday, and within the first five minutes, fans were piloted to a new ship with a new Captain. The war between Starfleet and the Klingons just got real, and Michael Burnham, Starfleet’s first mutineer, is going to be an asset to Captain Lorca.
Discovery‘s Captain Lorca is mysterious, but every allusion to The Original Series continues to light up Twitter like so many glowing spores. Starfleet and Klingons are preparing for war. Michael Burnham continues to win over fans as the human heroine in space everyone wants and needs, but Spock’s mom and a Tribble are winning over Twitter.
Dropping Science
The operative word in sci-fi is “science,” and Star Trek fans take it very seriously.
Anthony Rapp's character on #StarTrekDiscovery is named after real life mycologist Paul Stamets. Mushroom experiments in space. 🍄🖖🏿😍 pic.twitter.com/SYlErcUTPq

Wait a sec… matter synthesis? Did they have early replicators? Da fuq? Or did I mishear? #StarTrekDiscovery

We All Miss Spock
Michael Burnham, a human, was raised by Spock’s Vulcan father, Sarek. When Michael mentions Amanda Grayson, Spock’s human mother, Star Trek fans started down a rabbit hole of nostalgia.
that amanda mention in this weeks discovery tho#StarTrekDiscovery pic.twitter.com/sFVrsmNQtl

So Amanda would read to both Spock and Burnham together… Interesting. #StarTrekDiscovery

Further Down the Rabbit Hole
Amanda used to read to Spock and Michael, and the book is perfect for every space traveler. Michael says Amanda’s choice in books, Alice In Wonderland, taught her “that the real world doesn’t adhere to logic.”

Loving the "Alice in Wonderland" references. Very much geeking the hell out on this show.— Red Shirt Survival Fitness (@blakeussery007) October 2, 2017
Everyone Wants a Tribble on Their Desk Now
Between rabbit holes and black holes, Star Trek fans are familiar with Tribbles. The series timeline predates Star Trek The Original Series, so it’s logical to presume Tribbles have not caused much trouble for Starfleet, yet. We don’t know how he got it, but Captain Lorca keeps a single Tribble on his desk and it purrs. For now.
Here's to the #Tribble spotting on #StarTrekDiscovery! What would you name your pet tribble? #StarTrek #QOTD pic.twitter.com/J7XyUoModX

Starfleet’s First Mutineer
Within the first five minutes, Michael Burnham is dubbed “Starfleet’s First Mutineer” and she couldn’t be more #onfleet if she tried.

Discovery Feels a Lot Like. . .
With all its allusions to The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery is succeeding at reminding fans of other sci-fi shows, mostly Battlestar Galactica and The Expanse.
It really is Star Trek:BSG.
And I'm fine with that. #StarTrekDiscovery

This episode feels more like a Battlestar Galactica episode than a Star Trek episode #OnFleet 🖖🏾 #StarTrekDiscovery pic.twitter.com/BFfpVhrdwr

Really getting into #StarTrekDiscovery. Episode 3 has a wonderfully 'through the looking glass' creepy vibe. Also Tory from #BSG, yay!

So.. just finished Episode 3 of #StarTrekDiscovery and all I can say is.. Wow! If you want to watch a great sci-fi show, with conspiracy, intrigue, and well rounded, nuanced characters then you should definitely watch.. The Expanse. Like for real. Trek forgot to bring the Trek 🙁

What’s Next?
While some fans may be skeptical about the new Star Trek series, it’s clear the show is getting their attention. Will we catch a glimpse of the love story between Amanda Grayson and Sarek? What was it like for Michael Burnham to grow up around Spock? WTF are those glowing spores?! Will Captain Lorca teach us more about bioluminescence in space before his Tribble freaks out and multiplies? Either way, fans will boldly take to Twitter as the season unfolds.
