Disney just released the first image from its live-action Mulan.
The film is an adaptation of the hit 1998 animated feature of the same name. Production is underway in China and New Zealand.
Liu Yifei (Once Upon a Time) will play the title heroine Hua Mulan. Rounding out the star-studded cast are: Donnie Yen (Star Wars: Rogue One); Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny); Yoson An (The Meg); Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect); Ron Yuan (Marco Polo); Tzi Ma (Arrival); Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine); Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon); Nelson Lee; Chum Ehelepola; with Gong Li (Raise the Red Lantern) and Jet Li (Lethal Weapon 4).
Jet Li hadn’t been seen on Western screens since 2014’s Expendables 3, and fans were worried about the actor’s health after photos circulated of him looking frail. Fans will look forward to the action star playing The Emperor in Mulan.
When Li’s Emperor decrees that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, Mulan masquerades as a man to take the place of her ailing father. She becomes one of the great warriors ever, battling hordes of Northern Invaders attacking China.
The live-action Mulan will be released on March 27, 2020. It’s one of several Disney live-action remakes coming up.
Following last year’s record-breaking remake of Beauty and the Beast, a number of Disney movies (including iconic ones from the Disney Renaissance of the ’90s) will be returning to the big screen with live actors.
Here are the release dates:
Dumbo – March 29, 2019
Aladdin – May 24, 2019
The Lion King – July 19, 2019
