It’s trilogy time. Coming in October in is the third installment of the Da Vinci Code Series entitled Inferno. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Professor Robert Langdon, a professor of symbology and religious iconology. Basically, he studies religious symbols and customs, making him an expert in cults and historical religious practices. He discovered the truths behind the Holy Grail in the Da Vinci Code and was summoned by the Vatican in Angels and Demons. Now he returns in a third movie, Inferno, where he wakes up in an Italian hospital having lost all memory of how he got there. He realizes his life is in danger as is the fate of half the world’s population and he must decipher clues from Dante’s Inferno in order to save the world from a prophesied plague.
Here’s the just released official trailer:
Joining Hanks in the cast are Ben Foster from 310 to Yuma and X-Men: The Last Stand, Felicity Jones from the upcoming Rogue One, and Omar Sy and Irrfan Khan who were both in Jurassic World (ironically with Bryce Dallas Howard, Ron Howard’s daughter). It will be Tom Hanks’ first live action 3D movie (Toy Story and Polar Express were 3D animation).
Ron Howard returns to direct the third film in the series which should aim to improve upon its poor critical reviews from the first two (netting a 25% and 37% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes). It would make sense that Howard and Hanks working together can make a critical hit at least one out of three tries.
The financial success of the films is unquestioned. Da Vinci Code netted a profit of $843 million dollars, Angels and Demons netted $390 million.
Author Dan Brown has published four novels in this series that have sold over 200 million copies worldwide.
Inferno hits theaters October 28th.
