La La Land is expected to sweep the Oscars, but will it? We’re taking a tally of what this big prospect wins and loses on this big night. Here are all the nominations La La Land has. We’ll be updating this as the night goes on.
ACHIEVEMENT IN COSTUME DESIGN
LOST! The first loss for La La Land came from a few wizards in New York City. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them nabbed this one and that’s a good win. Those witches, wizards, and muggles were looking mighty fine.
ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND EDITING
LOST! The night isn’t looking so great right now for the leader of the pack, but that’s okay because Arrival is pure excellence. Hope it nabs some more wins because it’s going to end up as a classic.
ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND MIXING
LOST! La La Land is 0 for 3! Hacksaw Ridge picks up its first win of the night. Could the Academy be saving La La Land for some of the big awards?
ACHIEVEMENT IN PRODUCTION DESIGN
WON! The first win of the night! Expect them to start coming fast and furious.
ACHIEVEMENT IN FILM EDITING
LOST! Another loss at the hands of Hacksaw Ridge! Looks like it’s not quite the sweep everyone was expecting. Still, should have gone to Arrival.
ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY
WON! It is a gorgeous looking movie. That can’t be denied. This is a good win.
ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES (ORIGINAL SCORE)
WON! Get out your brooms, the sweeping has begun!
ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES (ORIGINAL SONG)
WON! Surprised this wasn’t for “Audition,” but this was expected.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
LOST! Not the biggest surprise here, but maybe this is when the steam gets let out of La La Land.
ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING
WON! Oh snap! This is a big win. Should’ve gone to Arrival but I’m happy for Damien Chazelle.
PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
LOST! Affleck was the favorite and it played out as expected. But Emma Stone could still claim a big one!
PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
WON! And she did! Would’ve loved to see Ruth Negga nab this, but congrats. She did a hell of a job.
BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR
WON! WAIT, LOST! Well, THAT was awkward. La La Land was announced as the winner but then it was revealed Moonlight actually won. What a weird end to a very good night.
