The Five Cornerstone Superhero Teams

I love Batman. Flash is brilliant. I vary on Green Lanterns but they are all fairly kick-ass. However, there’s always the problem of world ending events. Darkseid could mop the floor with Superman’s raggedy cape if they squared off alone. The Injustice Society would obliterate the indomitable duo of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The list goes on and on. Superhero teams come together for a reason and stay together for others. Without diving into comparisons, here are the five cornerstone superhero teams of Marvel and DC.

5. Teen Titans

Something of the kiddie version of the Justice League, this group was initially formed by the various side-kicks of the DC universe – Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Speedy and Wonder Girl. Various forms of Titans have served over the years, going by names like New Teen Titans, New Titans and simply Titans with various members coming and going. They may not have as fancy equipment as the JLA but instead of a satellite have a swanky island resort and jet. It’s quite a cushy life for the teen heroes.

4. X-Men

A group of mutants that fight to save both human and mutant lives, the X-Men are among some of the comic worlds most noble creations. Founded by Charles Xavier, mutants who are often feared or hated by normal humans are taught that all life has value and they they should protect whomever they can. Although many versions of the X-Men have come and gone, they remain one of the toughest groups around.

3. Justice League

With a core trinity comprised of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, the Justice League remains my favourite team of all time. Usually incorporating a Flash as well, the roster of the Justice League has changed several times over the years. Previous members include Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Atom and Plastic Man. But with all their powers comes a certain ease against villains that places them at third in the list.

2. Avengers

Avengers

Dubbed ‘Earth’s mightiest heroes’, the Avengers are the crowning masterpiece of Marvel’s universe. Following in the footsteps of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers were the first group to be granted full official sanctions by the United States, United Nations and – most impressively – S.H.I.E.L.D.. Much as I love the Justice League, the Avengers have suffered through most differences between the team than others and emerged the stronger for it. For this reason, they come out on top.

1. Earth

Superpowered Humans

I’ve picked two of the best teams from each universe but the hands down winner has got to be from DC. With Mageddon appearing in the skies, the assembled forces of good learn the hard way that they can’t handle the threat alone. Despite their repeated attempts to jump into the firing line, the inhabitants of Earth aren’t having any of it. Granted superpowers as a defensive measure, humanity takes to the sky and holds their own alongside their heroes.
