Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel Studios‘ best film for a number of reasons, and one of those reasons is because of its willingness to utilize some of the weirder characters in the Marvel cosmic canon. Though we’ve all come to love Rocket Raccoon and Groot, they are still bizarre concepts for characters. Writer/director James Gunn is obviously infatuated with the wackier side of the Marvel universe, so today’s rumor about a new character showing up in the sequel sounds completely plausible.
Sources say that Ego the Living Planet is going to make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Ego the Living Planet is exactly what he sounds like: a giant planet with a talking face on it. He’s one of the oddest characters in the entire Marvel universe, but he was popular enough to have the band Monster Magnet write a song about him:
It doesn’t fit the time frame of the music that would be on Peter Quill‘s cassette tape, but it would be a serious missed opportunity for Gunn to leave the song out. How many times do we get prepackaged songs about Marvel characters?
Ego is an incredibly powerful character, so I wonder if he’ll play into the plot in larger or smaller way. Ego and Thanos did go to war back in the day, so it’s possible he’ll have a bigger role to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues to let its freak flag fly on May 5, 2017.
