Kung Fu Panda 3 came out of the gates kicking and it paid off. Pulling in an estimated $41,000,000 over the weekend, the latest in the Dreamworks series didn’t equal the numbers of the first two entries in the series but certainly did well enough to win the weekend in a big way. It’s the largest January opening for an animated film in history and it shows that there’s plenty of life left in the Jack Black-driven Kung Fu Panda franchise.
It’s difficult to be surprised at anything relating to The Revenant and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens at this point. Both films did the unexpected and once again persevered in the number two and three slot, demolishing the rest of the new releases. The latter looks to cross the $900,000,000 domestic total something this coming week.
The Finest Hours did a little over ten million dollars but the big budget film looks to end up being a massive failure unless it’s able to sustain itself amidst decent reviews. 50 Shades of Black showcased that maybe it’s best to leave some things good and well enough alone.
Next week looks to bring with it some modest numbers and with that let’s see how badly I do at guessing their take.
The Numbers Game
I’ve added a little fun into the box office report. A little guessing game. Let’s see how close we can get to guessing the correct box office numbers for the movies opening next week.
Last Week:
Kung Fu Panda 3
My Guess: $35,000,000
Actual: $41,000,000
Result: Not too bad!
The Finest Hours
My Guess: $8,000,000
Actual: $10,327,000
Result: Not too bad!
50 Shades of Black
My Guess: $15,000,000
Actual: $6,186,648
Result: Not even close, bud!
Hail, Caesar!
The Coen Brothers alone are cause for a trip to the movie theaters. Their films are a delightful rogue’s gallery of deeply funny, obtuse, and unforgettable characters and their latest looks like it could be something special. With a cast including George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, and Scarlett Johansson, it has the potential to be one of their upper echelon comedies. And it’s Hollywood’s least likely duo making a movie about Hollywood. It’s a lock.
My guess: $14,000,000
The Choice
It’s the seemingly yearly Nicholas Sparks adaptation, which means someone will fall in love and someone will either die or nearly die. Somewhere within all of that there’ll be a lesson of some sort. And there will be pretty people throughout. Crud, did I just spoil every Nicholas Sparks movie?
My guess: $10,000,000
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Though it seems as if this film is coming out a few years after the whole trend of adding supernatural creatures to existing works of fiction has subsided, there’s a lot of talent here. The trailer boasts quite a bit of production value and there are not one but two Game of Thrones alumni on board. It may be just enough to grab a chunk of the audience this coming weekend.
My guess: $12,500,000
See you next week!
