After hearing the great new that Attack on Titan will return next year, now fans can mark their calendars… sort of. During the Funimation announcement panel at Anime Expo, the company revealed that Attack on Titan Season 3 would have a spring 2018 release date. Although we still don’t know the exact date yet, at least now we can say that it will premiere between April and June.

While this is big news for fans of the popular series, it’s also worth mentioning that the panel didn’t say how many episodes Wit Studio will produce for the third season. Attack on Titan‘s second season only had 12 episodes which was less than half that of the first season of 25 episodes. Nevertheless, fans are happy that they don’t have to wait four years for a new season.

After a short but thrilling second season, Attack on Titan ended on Saturday. The megahit anime series’ second season premiered in spring 2017 after almost four excruciating years of waiting following the climactic season one finale. But, fans were overjoyed when right at the end of the season finale, the show revealed that it would return for a third season in 2018.

The official Attack on Titan Twitter account also shared the great news:

Seasons 1 and 2

In the first season, fans got to know Eren, Mikasa, and Armin whose lives changed after a never-before-seen Titan – Colossal Titan – appeared, and with one kick, tore down Wall Maria. However, at the end of season one, the show revealed that the Walls were made of living Titans.

While fans were expecting that the key plot for the second season would continue exploring this mystery, they did not expect it to be so short. Fans were upset when the studio revealed that the new season would only have 12 episodes. Despite its shorter run, the season still delivered some powerful punches that left fans on the edge of their seats.

The second season explored the mystery of the Walls and also added a new Titan to the mix – the Beast Titan. And while Eren, Mikasa, and Armin were still the main protagonists, the second season shed some light on some of its secondary characters and some of the fan favorites.

Season 3

Fans took to Twitter to share their joy that they wouldn’t be waiting another four years to find out what’s next after that nail-biting season 2 finale.

To date, the studio has not yet revealed any more details about season 3 other than the anime series will air sometime in 2018. It’s unclear whether the next season will pick up where season 2 left off or if it will closely follow the manga story. Nor is there any word on whether the third season will be 12 episodes or will opt for a longer full season run. At any rate, we can’t wait for 2018 to arrive!

The English dubbed version of Attack on Titan season 2 is now airing on Adult Swim’s Toonami and Funimation.
