Now, the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, only to be resurrected on Netflix for yet another hilarious season. That’s right, friends, the Bluth family is officially returning to the streaming service with the Season 5 premiere of Arrested Development on May 29.
The cult classic first premiered on FOX in 2003 and struggled to find an audience large enough to keep it on the network past 2006. But thanks to the internet’s passion for the show’s catchphrases and characters, Netflix brought it back for a fourth season in 2013. And although the revival felt disjointed and disappointing (more on that below), the creators acknowledged the problems and are ready to fix their huge mistakes.
On Monday, almost 15 years since the series first debuted, a trailer for the fifth season officially dropped and one thing seems to be clear — the Bluths are back! Here’s everything we know so far about Season 5.
Fixing Season 4’s Mistakes
The cast’s careers blew up after Arrested Development first went off the air in 2006, which made it extremely difficult to get them all together in order to shoot the fourth season. To work around it, the writers focused on one character per episode, which ultimately detracted from the ensemble interacting with one another — a huge part of what makes the show so brilliant.
But we’re about to get the ultimate family reunion, as all the original actors will be returning (and working together) in the upcoming iteration. That means Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Portia de Rossi, David Cross, Tony Hale, and Jessica Walter will all be in the same room together once more.
What The Trailer Tells Us
In classic Arrested Development style, the new trailer pokes fun at the problems of Season 4, acknowledging that the Bluths are getting a new new beginning that will have audiences doing their best chicken dance in excitement.
The new footage shows that the Bluths will be receiving the Family of the Year award, mostly because they’re giving it to themselves. We see that Lindsay is now running for Congress because she’s “ready to be part of the problem, Michael.” Buster is channeling his inner Thanos with a new metal hand. And whatever Maeby’s latest scheme is, it clearly involves a lot of wigs and disguises. We’re so excited, we just blue ourselves.
The Arrested Development Remix
Feeling a little foggy on where things left off with the Bluths back in 2013? Then you’re in luck because series creator Mitch Hurwitz recut the fourth season and turned the original 15 episodes into a more linear 22 with interweaving storylines.
Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences is available to stream on Netflix now and promises to provide a dysfunctional family experience that more closely resembles the first three seasons. That means you can have a more enjoyable time reliving the action from Season 4 in preparation for the fifth season to start streaming on May 29.
