Life is Feudal is a peculiar beast, in that there is nothing else quite like it out there. Billed as a “hardcore sandbox MMORPG set in a realistic medieval world,”the game offers an incredible amount of freedom to let players do whatever they wish. It also balances the line between authentic historical simulation and fun medieval-themed action game. But that’s just scratching the surface of what you can expect.

It’s always been assumed that the world you explore in an MMO is a static one. Things rarely change, and when that change is introduced it’s done so in a big way. Not so with Life is Feudal, where change to the game world is a part of every day life. You’re able to raise and lower the land around your castle, digging tunnels and carving moats around your keep. But this is just one aspect of the vast amount of customization placed at your fingertips.

Another incredibly deep aspect of Life is Feudal is the robust crafting system. You are given a deep well of options to pursue, including 40,000,000 (yes, million) potential alchemy combinations. Of course these are all things you need to learn and experiment with, and the only way to do that is to find an alchemist’s table and play around with the different recipes to find combinations that work best for what you’re looking for.

Of course Life is Feudal isn’t just about crafting items and terraforming the world like an omnipotent overlord. There is also a distinctive combat system that goes above and beyond the hack-and-slash madhouses of old. For starters, there is a real-time realistic damage system that’s based on human anatomy, where you can be hobbled by broken bones and bleed out from untreated cuts. You can also be knocked unconscious, or be fatigued from a lack of breath. Hunger also plays into your general health, so be sure to eat to keep your strength up.

Life is Feudal is not joking about its claim to being a “hardcore” MMO. When you take the above, and you include things like asset destruction when rival players raid your keep, and player-vs-player combat, and you have yourself something that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

You can try Life is Feudal for yourself right now, as the game has become part of the Steam Early Access program. This will give you immediate access to the game, where you can help shape the final release while also playing a pretty awesome game. Of course, if you want to learn more about the game you can head over to the Official Life is Feudal Wiki, where you can find information about different weapons, building materials, and details about the combat systems.
