2019 is almost at an end and some of the mightiest movies of the year are just around the corner. We’ve compiled the ten most intriguing and exciting movies coming out before the year is up!
Joker (Out now)
This is the only entry on our list that has already been released, but it’s already creating a ton of buzz and might be the most talked-about movie of the year. This gritty origin story about the Clown Prince of Crime may even end up taking home a few Oscars. As far as comic book movies go, this is not one to miss.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (In select theaters and available on Netflix October 11)
The landmark television series gets a brand new continuation in this highly anticipated feature-length follow-up. Jesse Pinkman might have escaped the horrors at the end of Breaking Bad, but it looks like his journey didn’t end there. With fans eager to know how this saga could potentially close out after a successful series finale, El Camino is one of the riskiest and most thrilling films of the entire year.
Zombieland: Double Tap (In theaters October 18)
The loveable makeshift family of survivors is back in this new adventure into the post-apocalyptic landscape that is Zombieland. They’ll be facing newly evolved zombies and problems with each other as they meet brand new characters and visit even more parts of the desolate United States. With an all-star cast, this sequel is sure to be one of the nuttiest and funniest films you can see.
Terminator: Dark Fate (In theaters November 1)
The Terminator is back and he’s not the only one returning for this reboot of the sci-fi franchise. Following the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, this entry will get us reacquainted with iconic heroine Sarah Connor as she helps to protect a mysterious girl who may hold the key to saving the world. With Deadpool director Tim Miller behind the camera and series creator James Cameron returning as producer, this Terminator movie is sure to be an action extravaganza worth seeing on the big screen.
Doctor Sleep (In theaters November 8)
Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining gets the adaptation treatment and will also act as a direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece. Danny Torrance is now an adult and has tried to suppress his supernatural powers, but he must unlock them once again when a gang of psychic vampires begins hunting a little girl who shares Danny’s special abilities. Directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House), this horror epic is going to be a must-see event for anyone who loves Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick’s game-changing original film.
Frozen 2 (In theaters November 22)
Disney continues the story of Elsa, Anna, and the kingdom of Arendelle in this grandiose sequel to the smash-hit original. Elsa and her friends travel to a mysterious location to discover the source of her powers, and what they find out will be crucial in helping them save all of Arendelle. Frozen was a massive success and this sequel promises to be even bigger and bolder than the first film.
The Irishman (In select theaters November 1, available on Netflix November 27)
Renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese returns with an expansive tale about a mob hitman’s long and storied life that includes the possible involvement in the death of Jimmy Hoffa. The digital de-aging technology used on cast members like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci has been called revolutionary, and any time Scorsese dives into the gangster genre is a reason to take notice. The Irishman is already garnering a potential Best Picture nomination, so you know it’s going to be an essential 2019 film.
Jumanji: The Next Level (In theaters December 13)
The huge success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle pretty much guaranteed we’d be taking another trip into the wild world of Jumanji. Jumanji: The Next Level will bring back the original star-studded cast as well as some newcomers to the game. Spencer, the lead character from the last film, secretly rebuilt the Jumanji game and has gotten sucked back into it. It’s up to his friends, Spencer’s grandfather, and his elderly acquaintance to dive into Jumanji and save Spencer. With a ton of laughs and high adventure spectacle, Jumanji: The Next Level is going to be fun for the whole family.
Cats (In theaters December 20)
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s historic musical makes its way to the big screen courtesy of Les Misérables director Tom Hooper. The original musical is one of the longest-running Broadway shows in history, and this film adaptation is gearing up to be one of the grandest spectacles of the year. Following the lives of a number of street cats, this is possibly the strangest and most fascinating big studio productions of the year. If the stage musical’s success is any indication, this is certain to be one of the most popular movies of the year.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (In theaters December 20)
No question that this finale to the new Star Wars trilogy will be one of the most monumental movies of 2019. Director J.J. Abrams is returning to close out the story he began in The Force Awakens, and we’ll be seeing exactly how the story of Rey concludes as she faces down Kylo Ren and the First Order for the last time. And with the promised return of Emperor Palpatine, fans can’t wait to see how the legendary villain factors into this final installment.
